What an ATS actually does

An ATS scans your resume, extracts the text into fields (name, education, skills, experience), and matches it against the job description. It reads top-to-bottom, left-to-right, and expects standard section headings. Anything unusual, columns, tables, graphics, can break that extraction.

• ✅ Standard headings: Objective, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications.
• ✅ Real text in the body, not inside images or the header/footer.
• ✅ Common fonts (Calibri, Arial); simple bullet points.
• ✅ Keywords from the job description (skills, tools, role title).
• ✅ Saved as a text-based PDF or .docx. One page.

Use the right keywords

The ATS ranks you partly on keyword match. Read the job post and mirror its exact skill terms, if it says "SQL" and "data analysis," use those words (truthfully) in your Skills and Projects. Don't stuff; weave them in naturally.
