ATS-Friendly Resume Format for Freshers

Most mid and large companies in India screen resumes with an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) before a recruiter reads them. If the software can't parse your resume, you're filtered out, no matter how good you are. Here's how to make a fresher resume the ATS reads perfectly.

What an ATS actually does

An ATS scans your resume, extracts the text into fields (name, education, skills, experience), and matches it against the job description. It reads top-to-bottom, left-to-right, and expects standard section headings. Anything unusual, columns, tables, graphics, can break that extraction.

Why Canva and two-column templates fail

Those beautiful templates are built for the human eye, not the parser. Common failure points:

  • Columns & text boxes: the ATS reads across columns and jumbles your content.
  • Icons & images: "email" or "phone" as an icon means the ATS never captures your contact details.
  • Headers/footers: some ATS ignore them entirely, so info placed there vanishes.
  • Tables for layout: frequently misread or flattened.

The ATS-friendly checklist

  • ✅ Single column, top to bottom.
  • ✅ Standard headings: Objective, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications.
  • ✅ Real text in the body, not inside images or the header/footer.
  • ✅ Common fonts (Calibri, Arial); simple bullet points.
  • ✅ Keywords from the job description (skills, tools, role title).
  • ✅ Saved as a text-based PDF or .docx. One page.

Use the right keywords

The ATS ranks you partly on keyword match. Read the job post and mirror its exact skill terms, if it says "SQL" and "data analysis," use those words (truthfully) in your Skills and Projects. Don't stuff; weave them in naturally.

The easy way

Our free Fresher Resume Builder was built specifically for this: it outputs a single-column, standard-heading, text-based resume that passes ATS parsing, then lets you download it in Word or PDF. No design skills needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Canva resume ATS-friendly?

Usually not. Canva templates often use columns, text boxes, icons and background graphics that Applicant Tracking Systems misread, so your details get scrambled or skipped. A single-column, text-based resume is far safer.

How do I check if my resume is ATS-friendly?

Copy all the text from your resume PDF and paste it into a plain notepad. If the order is jumbled or sections disappear, the ATS will struggle too. Our free builder avoids this by generating clean, single-column text.

PDF or Word for ATS?

Both work if the file contains real, selectable text (not an image). A cleanly formatted .docx or text-based PDF both parse well. Never submit a screenshot or scanned image of your resume.
