Cover Letter for Freshers: Format and Free Examples
26 Aug 2026
Most freshers either skip the cover letter or copy a stiff template that says nothing. A good cover letter is short, specific, and tells the recruiter why you, for this role. Here’s the format and an example.
The format (keep it to half a page)
Greeting: “Dear Hiring Manager,” (or the name if you have it).
Opening (2 lines): the role you’re applying for and a hook, why you’re excited or a relevant strength.
Middle (3 to 4 lines): one or two proof points. A project, internship or skill that maps to the job, with a result. Don’t repeat your whole resume; pick the highlights.
Closing (2 lines): a confident line asking for the next step, plus a thank you.
Keep the whole thing to 150 to 200 words. Recruiters skim.
A short example
Dear Hiring Manager,
I’m applying for the Junior Data Analyst role at [Company]. As a B.Sc graduate who built a sales-forecasting project in Python and Excel, I’m keen to turn messy data into decisions your team can use.
In my final-year project I analysed 5,000+ records and cut reporting time by 40% with a simple dashboard. I’m comfortable with SQL, Excel and clear data storytelling, and I learn fast.
I’d love to show how I can help. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Warm regards, [Your name]

Common mistakes
- Making it generic (no company or role named).
- Repeating the resume word for word.
- Writing a full page. Half a page is plenty.
