5 Fresher Resume Mistakes That Get You Auto-Rejected
3 Sept 2026
Here’s the part nobody tells you. At most mid and large companies, software reads your resume before a person does. It’s called an Applicant Tracking System, and if it can’t make sense of your resume, you’re out, quietly, before anyone notices you were even a good fit. These five mistakes cause most of those silent rejections.
1. A two-column or Canva template
They look great on screen and fall apart inside an ATS. Columns, text boxes and little icons get read in the wrong order or dropped completely, so your neat design turns into scrambled text.
The fix is boring but it works: a single-column layout with normal headings. Our free builder does this for you, and the ATS-friendly format guide explains the why.
2. Contact details hidden in an image or header
If your phone number and email sit inside an icon or up in the document header, some systems never read them. You could be perfect for the role and the recruiter still can’t reach you.
Put your name, phone, email and city as plain text at the very top of the page. Nothing fancy.
3. A copy-paste objective
“Seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation” says nothing about you. Recruiters have read it a thousand times and their eyes slide right past it.
Name the role and two real skills instead. There are objective examples by stream here if you want a starting point.
4. Listing duties instead of results
“Responsible for a project” is forgettable. What did the project actually do? Who used it? By how much did it help?
Start with a verb and add a number. We put together 40 action verbs that beat ‘responsible for’ for this exact reason.
5. Too long, or missing the obvious keywords
A three-page fresher resume gets skimmed and dropped. So does one that never uses the words in the job description. If the post asks for “SQL” and “data analysis,” those words need to appear on your resume (honestly, of course).
Keep it to one page and mirror the language of the role.
