How to Write a Resume for Your First Job (Step by Step)

Writing your first resume feels awkward because it seems like you have nothing to put on it. You do. You just have to frame it right. Here’s a simple, step-by-step way to build a first resume that gets you shortlisted, even with zero jobs behind you.

Step 1: Start with your contact details

Name, city, phone, a professional email, and your LinkedIn if you have one. Keep it plain text at the top. Skip the photo, date of birth and full address for most Indian corporate roles (those matter more for hospitality and Gulf CVs).

Step 2: Write a short objective

Two lines: the role you want and the skills you bring. Be specific. “B.Com graduate skilled in Excel and Tally, seeking an entry-level accounts role” beats “seeking a challenging position.” Need ideas? See our objective examples by stream.

Step 3: Put education next

As a fresher this is one of your strongest sections, so it goes near the top. List your degree, college, year and CGPA or percentage. Add Class XII if it helps.

Step 4: List your skills

A clean, comma-separated line of the technical and soft skills that match the job. Read the job post and mirror its wording (honestly).

Step 5: Turn projects and internships into your “experience”

This is where you win. You don’t need a full-time job, use academic projects, internships, training and volunteering. Describe each with a verb and a result:

“Built a class attendance app in React used by 200+ students.”
“Interned at a digital agency and helped grow an Instagram page by 3,000 followers.”
