One Page or Two? How Long Your Resume Should Be

“How long should my resume be?” is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: as long as it needs to be to make your case, and not a line more. Here’s a simple rule.

The simple rule

• Fresher or up to ~3 years of experience: one page. You don’t have enough relevant history to justify more, and recruiters prefer a tight, scannable page.
• Mid-career (roughly 4 to 10 years): one or two pages. Two is fine if the second page earns its place.
• Senior or very experienced: two pages (rarely more). Federal and academic documents are the exception and run longer.

Why shorter usually wins

Recruiters spend seconds on the first pass. A one-page resume that leads with your strongest points is easier to scan than two pages they have to dig through. Length is not impressive; relevance is.

How to trim a resume that’s too long

• Cut old or irrelevant roles, and anything from more than 10 to 15 years ago.
• Remove the generic objective and replace it with a sharp two-line one.
• Turn paragraphs into short, result-focused bullet points.
• Drop “references available on request,” hobbies, and filler skills.
• Tighten wording: “responsible for” becomes a strong action verb.

The exception: hospitality and Gulf CVs
